Several months ago I had a client inquire about teaching a photography class.  I did so and enjoyed it. To my surprise, several people asked me later if I had considered teaching a photography workshop.  Several of these ladies had just purchased brand new DSLR cameras and wanted to learn how to use them to create photos that shared the story they saw.

I remember being in their shoes many years ago.  I remember wishing I had someone sit down and show me how to use my amazing new camera.  I began to brainstorm….but suddenly I got caught up in bluebonnet photos, then family sessions, then I taught another class and before I knew it months had passed.  The idea, however, had never left my mind.  Nor had the requests for the workshop!
Now that I have dates finalized, I am proud to share with you the news!  I will be hosting my first workshop!

Let me tell you what this workshop will entail:

  • The basics of using Manual on your DSLR: how your ISO, Shutter Speed, and Aperture work together to make a well exposed photo
  • General rules to make your photos tell the story you desire to tell
  • Capturing the story instead of a snapshot
  • Lighting and composition
  • A lot of practice & critique during the workshop
  • A take home guide so you can use these tips on your own
  • Lunch
I want to be clear, this workshop is not intended to help you become a professional photographer, but instead to help your photos go from drab snapshots to fabulous photos to help you remember the moments.
Because we will be going beyond the “automatic” mode on your camera, you will need a DSLR camera.  In past classes I have taught I have let students use a point and shoot.  This has greatly limited my students, so I have made that the one rule I am sticking with for these workshops.
Now that I have shared this awesome news, I have some even greater news….I am going to have a give away!  3 lucky ladies will have the chance to join me at my first workshop!  If you are interested leave a comment here with your name and email address.  If you feel more comfortable, you may leave me a comment under “contact me” here instead:

The First Workshop will be Saturday June 30 11am- 2pm

Contest ends at NOON on JUNE 23rd.  After randomly picking 3 lucky ladies, I will announce the winners that evening!  Good Luck!

  1. I think this is a fabulous idea, Kelly! I would benefit greatly from a workshop with you. I need to learn the more technical part. Most of the time I feel like I’m just winging it and lately, my pictures are surely suffering from that. I can’t wait!
